A fine, crisp copy in modern drab boards. Very light dampstain to title and margin of opening leaves. Small paper defect in blank margin of one leaf, not affecting text. Illustrated throughout with 84 engraved diagrams and instruments.

First edition of the Dutch translation of this work on sundials, chronometry, and astronomical calculation by the German astronomer, mathematician, cartographer, and brewer Bartholomäus Schultz (1540-1614). The original German edition, entitled “Gnomonice de Solariis ... Von allerley Solarien, das ist, Himmlischen Circuln und Uhren”... was first published in 1572 at Leipzig. Scultetus discusses sundials on flat surfaces, on cubes, six-sided prisms and pyramids, and, finally, on spheres, cones and cylinders. According to Sotheran, the work is especially interesting for Scultetus's transversal division on the circle, which was afterwards applied by Scultetus’ friend Tycho Brahe on his quadrant. The engraved illustrations were made especially for the present Dutch translation, the German edition was illustrated with woodcuts.

Bartholomäus received early instruction from his brother Zacharias, who installed a sundial on the Görlitz Ratsapotheke in 1550. After studying at Wittenberg, Bartholomäus moved to Leipzig, where he studied under the mathematician Johannes Homelius, who taught him to make instruments. There, in March 1564, he met Tycho Brahe, whom he helped to construct his first astronomical instrument. He returned to Görlitz in 1570 and accepted a position as a teacher of mathematics and astronomy at the Görlitzer Gymnasium Augustum. In the same year Bartholomäus opened his brewery in Petersstraße. As a brewer, he belonged to the class of citizens to whom all municipal offices were open. From 1578 he served his town in various capacities: as treasurer, judge, envoy to the Emperor, and mayor (six times.)

Scultetus achieved lasting fame as an astronomer, cartographer, and mathematician. He was personally acquainted with Johannes Kepler (who visited him in April 1607), Valentin Thau, and -as mentioned above- Tycho Brahe. In 1564, Scultetus helped Tycho construct his first instrument, a cross-staff. “Scultetus had studied with the late Professor Johannes Homelius, who had constructed observational instruments to explain Vitruvius, Hero of Alexander, Ptolemy, and Archimedes of Syracuse. Bartholomæus showed Tycho how Homelius made very fine subdivisions by placing dots at regular intervals along transversal lines behind a calibrated scale, and they did this on Tycho’s cross-staff.”(Christianson: Tycho Brahe’s Earliest Instruments)

Scultetus was primarily concerned with improving methods for the precise measurement of time (chronometry), calendrics, and chronology. He installed various sundials in Görlitz and the still extant twelve-hour clock on the town hall.

His outstanding achievement was his contribution to the Gregorian calendar reform. While many Protestant princes and scholars rejected the new calendar, Scultetus advocated for the introduction of the new calendar in Bohemian. On the orders of Emperor Rudolf II, the new calendar was introduced in Upper Lusatia in 1583 and other parts of Bohemia in 1584.

In Görlitz, the so-called “Observatorium Sculteti” is where Scultetus is believed to have made his astronomical observations.
